Abstract:This study approaches the integration of contemporary additions with historic buildings from architectural, functional, and structural perspectives. It first examines the rationale and design strategies behind contemporary interventions within the framework of adaptive reuse and architectural conservation. Through the analysis of 7 national and 7 international examples, a typological classification is proposed based on the spatial positioning, formal articulation, structural system integration, and material strategies of added structures. Design-based and technical challenges encountered in contemporary interventions are also addressed. Within this conceptual framework, the Tersane Istanbul Project is presented as a detailed case study. Based on site observations and archival project documents, the restoration and reuse of the registered T5 Foundry Building and its newly added basement structure are examined. Architectural surveys, design drawings, and technical details are analyzed to assess spatial organization, structural transformation, and material decisions. In the construction process, a top-to bottom method was employed to suspend the historic building while the new basement was built below, allowing protection of the original structure and seamless integration of new functions. The roof was reconstructed based on restitution data, preserving the building's original form and material character. By combining theoretical research with field-based architectural analysis, this study contributes to the discourse on contemporary additions to heritage buildings and offers new perspectives on sustainable preservation and adaptive reuse practices in architecture.
