Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to investigate university students' adjustment and instiutional integration levels to higher education. The study was a descriptive and a quantitative study. The working population of the study consisted of 181.909 university students that study in four universities (two of them being private, another two being state universities) in İstanbul province in the 2018-2019 academic year. The research sample consisted of 533 university students selected by stratified sampling method. The data were collected with "Institutional Integration Scale" and analyzed by SPSS 22.0 package program. According to the results, university students' adjustment and instiutional integration levels were found to be at the "Neither agree nor disagree" level. It was observed that students' adjustment and instiutional integration levels to higher education is at the level of "Neither agree nor disagree" at "Interactions with Faculty", "Faculty Concern for Student Development and Teaching", "Academic and Intellectual Development", "Institutional Commitment and Goal Commitment" subscales whereas it is at the "Agree" level at "Peer-Group Interactions" subscale According to the analysis of Institutional Commitment and Goal Commitment subscale, mean scores of the male students were found to be higher than females. Also, there was a difference between mean scores of Interactions with Faculty and Academic and Intellectual Development subscales in favor of private universites. When evaluated according to the major variable, no significant difference was found. At Peer-Group Interactions and Interactions with Faculty subscales, it was determined that students aged 18-20 were less compatible and willing than the other age groups. In addition, first grade students were found to be more compatible than the second, third and fourth grade students. The graduates of Anatolian High Schools were found to be more positive in their daily relations with faculty than the graduates of Science High Schools, Imam Hatip High Schools and Vocational and Technical High Schools. As stated by another result it was determined that students whose parents have high income had adjusted better than the ones whose parents have lower income. Orientation programs should be arranged to increase students' adjustment and instiutional integration levels to higher education.
