Abstract:The use of magnesium alloys for various purposes in the living body tissues due to outstanding features they have, is attracting more attention with each passing day. The main ground of this idea is the values of elasticity modulus, density and the specific strength of the magnesium alloys are quiet close to the cortical bone's. Also it is promising for new generation biomedical applications that the magnesium alloys are in biodegradable nature and they almost left no toxic effect after complete degradation. However, the most serious problem encountered with the use of magnesium alloys as a biomaterial is their relatively higher degradation rate in-vivo environment. This causes the lost of mechanical integrity before the completion of full recovery. In this study, specimens of provided AZ91E magnesium alloy were coated with poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), polycaprolactone (PCL) and polyetherimide (PEI) with %1 wt, %3 wt and %5 wt concentrations by dip coating method in order to slow down the degradation rate. Thickness and the morphology of the coatings were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Degradation rate and the characteristic of the specimens' were investigated in Prof. Cuneyt Tas' simulated body fluid for 30 days by immersion tests. In order to determine the degradation behavior of the coated and uncoated samples weight measurements were implemented and the surface images were examined. Results showed that the coating thickness increased with increasing concentration of PLGA and PCL. Nevertheless, coated PEI layer was very inhomogeneous and were not shown any protective effect on the specimens. Serious decline at the degradation rates were observed for %3 wt and %5 wt PCL coated specimens compared to the other samples.
