Abstract:

In this study, it is aimed to produce functionally graded in situ TiB2/Al, TiB2/Al-4%Si and TiB2/Al-4%Cu composites by centrifugal casting method and investigate the abrasive wear properties of the produced composites. In situ technique has been used to form Titanium-diboride (TiB2) particles in the liquid matrix. Al-Ti molten prepared at 1200o C has been reduced to 800o C and Al(liquid) + TiB2(solid) solution has been obtained. Then, composites have been produced by centrifuging the solution at 1500 rpm under centrifugal force. Density tests, abrasive wear analyszes, hardness examinations and microstructure investigations have been taken into consideration while examining the properties of the produced Functionally Graded Composites. Weight losses in grams have been taken into account in determining the wear properties of the composite. Pin-on-disc wear system has been used and Taguchi approach has been used in the wear tests. As wear parameters; factors such as TiB2 particle ratio, matrix type, abrasive particle size, sliding speed, applied load and sliding distance were taken into account. It has been observed that the produced composites consisted of 2 regions and that these regions were TiB2 rich regions and TiB2 poor regions. It has been determined that the TiB2 ratio is 15% by weight in TiB2-rich regions, while the TiB2 ratio is 0% by weight in poor regions. It has been determined that the density values and hardness values of the TiB2-rich regions in all produced composites were higher than the TiB2-poor regions. It has been seen that abrasive wear losses decrease with increasing TiB2 particle ratio and sliding speed. It has been observed that wear losses increase with increasing abrasive particle size, increasing sliding distance and increasing applied load. It has been observed that pure Al, Al-4%Si and Al-4%Cu matrix types in composite materials also affect the amount of wear.
