Abstract:The preferred type of buildings in rural areas in our country is the masonry buildings because they provide low-cost production, ease of production and accessibility to materials. Recently, concrete and steel buildings are emphasised, and the masonry buildings are excluded for designing the earthquake-resistant structures. It is important to determine the design of the masonry building under the effect of earthquake due to the fact that our country is located in the active earthquake zone and there are many masonry buildings in our country. Due to the recent developments in technology, new material types and new calculation methods are used in the construction sector. It is inevitable that these developments should be reflected in the regulations for the evaluation of existing buildings and the design of new buildings. The new Earthquake Regulation 2018 (TBDY, 2018) entered into force in Turkey on 01.01.2019 and the old regulation (DBYBHY, 2007) was abolished at the same time. Considering the general guidelines and articles of both regulations, it is understood that the developing technology and knowledge are transferred into the new regulation. The aim of this thesis is the compression of the new earthquake regulation (TBDY, 2018) against the old regulation (DBYBHY, 2007) with providing an example from the real-world masonry building. The outline of this thesis is given as follows. Initially, the general information regarding the masonry building was presented. Then, the differences between the DBYBHY (2007) and the TBDY (2018) regulations were examined. Finally, a masonry building was selected, and its design criteria as well as its suitability were investigated according to both regulations. The results of this investigation study and conclusions were indicated in the last chapter of the thesis.
