Abstract:

Social studies is a highly disciplined subject. The curriculum of this course includes social sciences, geography, economics, sociology, history, anthropology, psychology, philosophy, political science and law; It should be taught in an integrated manner with subjects such as human rights, citizenship and democracy. One of the fields of study that can be integrated with the social studies course is literature. Many points have been emphasized in the social studies curriculum regarding the use of literary products during the lessons. In this direction, according to the curriculum, the social studies course should be supported with literary products by making use of genres such as epics, tales, proverbs, folk tales, legends, folk songs and poems. In this study, it is tried to determine the opinions of teachers about the use of literary products in social studies textbooks. 13 Social Studies teachers working in various schools in Eyüp and Esenler districts in Istanbul were determined as the working group. Qualitative research method is used in this study. A semi-structured interview form was used as a data collection tool. The collected data is tried to be analyzed by content analysis. Main results obtained through research: Social studies teachers emphasize that the use of literary products is necessary in the lessons. Teachers generally use literary products on history-based subjects. Social studies teachers generally find the textbook insufficient in terms of literary products, therefore they argue that the number of literary products in the book should be increased. The use of literary products; It is stated that it has many positive contributions such as acquiring a different perspective, multidimensional thinking, arousing a sense of curiosity, interest in the lesson, and using Turkish correctly and beautifully. In addition, our teachers state that literary works are the materials that should definitely be used in terms of transferring our values to students. The results were discussed with the literature and suggestions were put forward.
