Abstract:The aim of this study is to examine the integration of augmented reality (AR) technology into museum experiences and, in this context, to propose a functional model for digital guidance systems by designing an AR-supported virtual guide prototype for Istanbul Modern Art Museum. The study investigates how virtual guides, which transform visitors' access to information and enhance the level of interaction, can contribute to cultural spaces. The research was conducted using a qualitative design-based approach. Following an extensive literature review, existing AR-supported guidance systems in museums were examined, and a user-centered virtual guide design was developed. The prototype was modeled in 3D using Blender, animated via Mixamo, the user interface was designed in Figma, and the experience was integrated into an augmented reality environment using Adobe Aero. The designed system allowed users to obtain information about selected artworks by scanning them with their mobile devices, triggering an animated virtual guide. A usability test was conducted with five participants to evaluate the prototype. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected through the think-aloud protocol and a post-experience survey and interviews. Based on Nielsen's usability heuristics, the evaluation revealed that the prototype was generally perceived as intuitive, understandable, and user-friendly. Based on user feedback, several interface and guidance-related revisions were made. The findings show that AR-supported virtual guides not only present information but also enhance spatial awareness, offer personalization opportunities, and strengthen visitors' engagement with the museum. This study provides an example of the creative and functional use of digital technologies in museology and contributes to design-oriented approaches in the field.
