Abstract:

It has been observed that earthquakes occurring from the past to the present have caused significant damage to the structural elements of existing buildings. In light of this, it is essential to identify potential damage in structures such as schools, hospitals, fire stations, administrative buildings, and residential units under seismic loads and to prevent or minimize such damage through appropriate retrofitting techniques. In addition to conventional retrofitting methods, seismic isolation systems—whose importance has been increasing in recent years—aim to reduce seismic acceleration, dissipate the resulting energy, and thereby mitigate the seismic effects on building structural elements. This study involves the seismic performance evaluation of an existing 7-story hospital building in the province of Muğla. The building has a total height of 31.50 meters from the foundation level, 27.00 meters above the rigid basement floor, and each story has a height of 4.50 meters. The plan dimensions of the building's structural system are 43.00 meters by 24.00 meters. The structural system consists of cast-in-place columns and beams supported by these columns. The existing structure has a moment-resisting frame system without plan irregularities and is not adjacent to any neighboring buildings (i.e., not a party-wall structure). The seismic performance assessment of the existing reinforced concrete hospital building, retrofitted by conventional methods and seismic isolation units, was carried out per the Turkish Building Earthquake Code (TBSC-2018). As a conventional retrofitting method, a sufficient number of reinforced concrete shear walls along the interior axes of the structure were adopted. For the seismic isolation retrofitting approach, it was assumed that curved surface friction-type isolators were installed at the vertical load-bearing elements at the basement level. Performance evaluations were conducted using nonlinear time history analyses. In this context, 11 ground motion records compatible with the region's seismicity were selected. Additionally, a comparative cost estimation was performed for both retrofitting methods.
