Abstract:

Masonry structures are constructed of masonry units which have advantage of low cost and easy constructions. Since they are not homogeneous continuum and the behaviour under shear-compression are very complex, numerical modeling of masonry is one of the most challenging issue of structural engineering. In recent years, it has been observed that there has been significant increase for the studies of numerical modeling techniques of masonry walls. As a result of these studies, while the several numerical modelling techniques was developed for the in plane behaviour of masonry walls, detailed ongoing research on this issue is still continue. Masonry walls consist of main structural materials such as stones, bricks and mortar that provides the connection and load transfer between structural materials. These constituent materials of masonry walls have rather different mechanical properties from each other and when trying to modeling of these materials, it occurs necessary to use a comprehensive constitutive model. To reflect the behaviour of these constituent materials, Concrete Damage Plasticity (CDP) constitutive model is one of the most preferred constitutive model. It is important that the determine optimum values for plastic parameters of CDP model. This paper is focused on nonlinear finite element (NLFE) modeling of masonry shear walls at a macro-level taking the material parameters of CDP. For this purpose, a comprehensive nonlinear finite element analyses (NLFEA) of masonry walls subjected to a combination of vertical and horizontal forces has been achieved. The validity of the model is determined by comparing with experimental results from past studies. Detailed sensitivity analysis on the dilation angle and viscosity parameter for CDP model has been performed using ABAQUS software. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the role of parameters in CDP constitutive model and to calibrate the lateral load-displacement response of model, effects of different values of the dilation angle and the viscosity parameter are detailed. Obtained results show that the proper choice of values of dilation angle and viscosity parameter are significantly important when using CDP model for modeling purposes.
