Abstract:

Due to its simplicity, durability, low cost, and other features, masonry has been one of the most used building materials since ancient times. Masonry is still in practice even in highly seismic regions such as Turkey. Since the structural behaviour of masonry walls under in-plane lateral loading is very complicated, numerical modelling of masonry wall as a main structural element of masonry is one of the most challenging topics of structural engineering. In the last few decades, especially with the development of computer programs able to solve nonlinear problems, there has been a significant increase in studies related to the behaviour of masonry structures. For this purpose, several numerical modelling techniques have been developed by researchers. Masonry walls containing openings have been shown to have the poor in-plane capacity, but further research is required to establish the relationship between the size and position of openings and the in-plane capacity of the walls. This study is focused on the nonlinear finite element analysis of unreinforced masonry walls with and without openings as well as the effect of openings on the in-plane behaviour of masonry walls. Masonry is assumed to be homogeneous composite material and is modelled with the macro-modelling approach. To simulate the nonlinear behavior of the walls, an appropriate constitutive modeling technique is required. Herein, a concrete damaged plasticity model is adopted. In this context, the material parameters of walls are obtained through an extensive literature review. The validity of the proposed model is done by comparing the results obtained by numerical solutions with the experimental ones in terms of lateral force-lateral displacement curve and cracking mechanisms. By using the proposed model, a number of numerical analysis of the walls with different opening sizes and positions under the combination of vertical and lateral loads are done to identify their impact on the in-plane behavior of unreinforced masonry walls.
