Abstract:With the development of digital technologies, narrative forms have also undergone a transformation, and comic books have been affected by this transformation and have begun to appear in new media environments. With the adaptation of comic books to different digital media, elements such as sound, animation, and interaction have become part of this medium. However, this situation has changed and expanded the unique structure of printed comic books. The interactive reading experiences brought about by these technologies transform readers into active participants, merging the physical world with the digital world. Therefore, the immersive experience provided by virtual reality (VR) technology necessitates a redefinition of the comic book's spatial, temporal, and panel structure. This situation has brought discussions about what comics are and where their boundaries begin and end to the forefront. In the literature review, it was determined that the content developed and scientific research conducted in the field of virtual reality-supported comics are insufficient to answer these questions. This thesis analyzes the formal and narrative structures of virtual reality-supported comics and based on the findings, proposes some structural and design recommendations to preserve the medium's structural boundaries in the VR environment. The analysis covers the effects of spatial narration, visual representation, cinematic narration and visual effects, animation, interaction design, and sound design elements on the virtual reality-supported comic books Bunker Man, Out of the Cave, and The Remedy. A significant portion of the hypotheses put forward during the field research process were supported by the findings. The study revealed that certain fundamental factors are decisive in preserving the structural boundaries of comics in VR environments: The spatial organization of the sequence between panels, a narrative structure that allows the reader freedom of experience, limiting the visual language to the stylized graphic narrative specific to comics, and exercising restraint in the use of elementssuch as animation, cinematic narrative, and visual effects.
