Abstract:

With the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, changes began in people's lifestyles, and this directly affected their living spaces. Rapid and uncontrolled urbanization, population growth and uncontrolled resource consumption that occurred during the industrialization process have created uniformized structures that consume more energy and environmental problems. The energy crisis has led to the awareness of the lack of resources on a global scale. This situation has revealed the necessity of different disciplines to deal with the concept of sustainability within their own scope. The energy consumed in residences takes up 22% of the sectoral distribution and people spend most of their time indoors. This situation has made the discipline of architecture one of the basic disciplines that should be studied in the context of sustainability. With the impact of the concept of sustainability and advanced technology; it has been observed that it also creates examples of buildings that are supposedly environmentally friendly, have high production costs and consume plenty of energy. In this sense, vernacular architecture; with its environment-integrated design, original and rational solutions, it draws attention in the context of sustainability. Within the scope of this study, it is aimed to examine the local in the context of sustainability, to reveal the sustainable qualities of Divriği houses and to create data for contemporary architectural approaches. There are many studies in the literature examining vernacular architecture in the context of sustainability. The principles and strategies determined within the scope of the VerSus Project, which is one of the evaluation tools used in these studies, are criteria created by examining vernacular architecture examples in different geographies. For this reason, within the scope of this study, the evaluation of vernacular architecture in terms of sustainability was made in line with the principles and strategies determined in environmental, sociocultural and socioeconomic dimensions in line with the VerSus Project. The fact that the Divriği houses were not considered in the context of sustainability before and being able to reach the necessary data about the houses that have survived while preserving their original qualities have been effective in the selection of the Divriği houses for the field study. Analysis of Divrigi houses; the photographs taken during the fieldwork were made according to the information and observations obtained from the local people. In this direction, sustainable qualities have been revealed. Suggestions have been presented in order to adapt these qualities to contemporary architecture and to sustain the existence of Divriği houses.
