Abstract:
According to the most widely-accepted definition, mentation is a process of producing
different thoughts through analyzing, comparing and associating information and
concepts in order to get to a result. The mental product produced as a result of these
processes is called “thought”. Over the years, the importance of mentation training is
discovered on this issue; seminars and conferences started to be organized by
specialists, many books have been written on the importance of mentation. As a
consequence of the many studies carried out on mentation training, a co-decision is
made on integrating the problem-solving and decision-making skills, which are valued
within the frame of mentation training, into primary school curriculum. It can be said
that various stimulants that students are exposed to within education system revealed

results.
In the study, true experimental method is used as an experimental method, and of the
true experimental methods, “pretest – posttest control group design” is applied. For this
purpose, experiment and control groups are created. In this context, in order to measure
the academic achievements of students, “Academic Achievement Test” is applied as
pretest and posttest both on experiment group students and control group students.

vii
groups students mentation training course is not taught but 3 hours of social studies
course is given as usual. SPSS 16 program will be used in the analysis of the
quantitative data acquired from the students as a result of these practices. “Unrelated
Samples T-Test” will be used in the determination whether there is a significant
difference between the pretest and posttest points of academic achievement test of the
experiment and control group students. “Related Samples T-Test” will be used in order
to analyze the change between pretest and posttest points within each group itself and
the results will be expressed by tabulating.
Through qualitative and quantitative data obtained, It was demonstrated the effects of
