Proje Özeti

Two sitesin Sarajevo have been chosen for this project, Souk Bunar and Nedzarici.

Souk Bunar, within the historic pait of Sarajevo, is a contact zone b e t ween parts of the city center

and the residential areas on the slopes of Mount Trebevic.

The city's master plan shows that this area has a density of 280 residents per acre. The area's

traffic is dependent on boundary routes such as the Southern longitudinal, Transit Road, and

Ljubljanska Street.

The students will be analyzing the traditional dwellings within the vicinity o f Souk Bunar and the

old tov.11, with a special focus on the Ottoman Sarajevo house, especially the Svrz ina house. The

analysis will consider aspects o f social relationships, residential privacy, adaptability to climatic

conditions, use o f specific materials, functional organization, spatial coınposition, and the

relationship o f open space to buildings. Students will consider the feasibility of constructing on

the sloped terrain. They vıill also research prefabricated light constnıction techniques used in

Bosnia as well as in Europe.

The other site, Nedzarici, in the new part o f to.,..11, is in Sarajevo's flatland region and borders with

the Stup suburb which is composed o f individual detached houses. Density in this area is 200

residents per acre. The new housing project will be integrated into the existing fabric, but the

possibility o f demolishing some buildings exists. The traffic routes as defıned by the existing

urban plan will be respected.

The analysis o f this area will follow the same lines as that o f Souk Bunar except they will

take into consideration contemporary business functions now integrated into the housing

structures on the ground level. Gardens and courtyards will be considered as an integral

part o f the new housing design. However, the concept of the house will be free in

composition and function, allowing students to create their own architectural Ianguage in

the context o f the loca! architecture.
