Proje Özeti

In the late period of the Ottoman Empire, one of the main dynamics of its modernization was public education.  Opening the new ones instead of the traditional educational institutions was a product searching for a different society and generation of society and the search for a different generation. In this process, ways to benefit from each treatment of the west were sought.  Firstly students were sent to Europe and then bringing educators, masters, importing course materials from Europe was one of the first of them.

In the process of westernization, West or Europe does not indicate a uniform integrity. When looked deeply, different West and modernization models may be seen. Notably, England, Germany and the French and in the last quarter century America has been also one of the model countries of modernization. In this period, in the Ottoman press, Ottoman intellectuals published their observations about travels to United States of America. A short while later some interests which about American education, philosophy and programs appeared.

Ideal for creating a new society and the state one of the most critical thresholds was overcame with the proclamation of Turkish republic in 1923. For the realization of this ideal, the shortest and the exact path was education and this was a predication which has been repeated since Young Ottomans and Young Turks. The founders of the Republic tightly connected to these principles. Opinions and suggestions of the western educators were given importance without taking into account local experience and potential about nature of the new educational model. As an indication of this that, one year after of the proclamation of the Republic, many western educators and experts notably from America were invited to Turkey. Therefore, philosophical and program infrastructure of a new educational system was attempted to create. John Dewey, Berly Parker, Paul Monroe, Henry Suzallu, Watson Dickerman, Kate Vixon Wofford are the leading names. These education experts and academicians prepared programs, provided detailed reports about almost all fields related to problems of Turkey education.

Studies about what the lasting impacts of American educators on Turkish education system, philosophy and programs in this period are rare. Concerned educators’ impact and contribution to American education system is not an investigated subject in Turkish Literature. In this context, to make researches about American educators who have studies about modernization of the Turkish education system, late Ottoman and early Republican period are seen important. In a three-month study planned to carry out in the United States of America, effects and contributions of American educators to the Turkish Education System (in terms of philosophy and programs) in the modernization of education system of late Ottoman and early Republican era will be researched.
