The project is aimed at analyzing new generation L-band ALOS/PALSAR-2 sensor images for the determination of Earth
surface deformation. Within this project, we will investigate deformation phenomena in two selected regions in Turkey. The first area is the very well-known supersite of the Marmara region, and the second area is an agricultural region in the Konya Closed
Basin located in the center of Turkey. Marmara region has suffered severe damages from earthquake events. Besides, such
highly urbanized region has been exposed to other natural hazards such as landslides and flooding. This implies a high risk
for human life and great concern for the sustainable management of such a highly populated megacity. The second area is
dominated by agriculture where wide surface deformation has been induced by to water over-exploitation. Due to the large
presence of karstic structures, the area is highly prone to surface displacement phenomena such as sinkholes. Investigation of
this region will be useful to support sustainable agricultural practices. To this aim, we will process high resolution
ALOS/PALSAR-2 via Small BAseline Subset (SBAS) – DInSAR technique of CNR-IREA, Italy, and StaMPS approach of
small baseline technique to detect spatial deformation over our selected areas. Moreover, time series analysis will be
conducted to examine the behavior of deformation over time. Having high resolution and large coverage as well as short
revisit time, with PALSAR-2 it is expected to monitor small- and large-scale displacements (i.e., local and tectonic
deformations) over the supersite area. Over the agricultural area of Konya, it is also expected to effectively detect
deformation over cultivated fields due to the higher penetration capability of the L-band sensor. The results will contribute to
vulnerability/risk analyses and decision-making processes.
