VOCABULARY  UNIT 4 

1. (A JOB WHICH IS) WELL- KNOWN FOR ITS JOB SECURITY:(A job which is) famous for keeping its employees
or workers well. Cares about their well-being, healthiness, etc.

2. TO BE MADE REDUNDANT: to lose your 
job. If a person is redundant, there is no more work for him to do.
(=to be laid off)

3. TO RECEIVE A PROMOTION: advancement of an employee within a company position or job tasks. It may be 
a higher ranking in the job or a reward for good performance.It may be a higher rate of pay or financial bonus. 

4.TO BE GIVEN AN INCREMENT
INCREMENT:increase, addition, gain

SALARY INCREMENTS: a percentage of an employee's base pay. It represents a portion of what the employee 
earns per year.

Employees use increments to increase or decrease base salaries.

5. UNSOCIABLE HOURS(=ALSO CALLED UNSOCIAL OR ANTI-SOCIAL HOURS): It is work that takes place outside the traditional 
9 am to 5 pm schedule.

6. A STEADY JOB: a safe job. It is very routine and pays a decent but not a high amount of money.
It is a safe job. 

7. BLUE- COLLAR WORKER: Someone whose profession requires them to perform manual labor.For example: WAREHOUSING,
 OIL FIELDS, FIREFIGHTING, CONSTRUCTION, SANITATION.

8. WHITE-COLLAR WORKERS:They are suit and tie workers who work at a desk. They don't do physical labor.

9. ADVERSE WORKING CONDITIONS: Physical conditions that make it impractical for workers to work

10. REPETITIVE STRAIN INJURY: When repetitive actions you do especially with your hands cause pain or
impairment of the tendons or muscles

11. REGULAR PERKS: (ALSO CALLED FRINGE BENEFITS) something extra you get in addition to a salary in exchange
for work. For example health insurance, company car, ice cream.

12. COMPULSIVELY: in a way that results from an irresistable urge. 

13. INCENTIVES: a thing granted that motivates or encourages someone to do something like a payment or 
allowance to stimulate greater output

14. ALLOWANCE: sum of money given 
(The incentive may be an allowance); to be given an allowance. 

15. COMMISSION: an amount of money that is paid to someone according to the value of the goods 
they have sold.
EXAMPLE SENTENCE: In addition to his salary, he gets a 1% commission on each sale.


16. TRADE UNION: A union which helps workers in issues like fairness of pay (equal payment), 
good working environment, etc.

17. A FORCED RESIGNATION: When an employee has no real choice but to resign. They do not resign 
voluntarily.
