VOCABULARY REVISION -DEFINITIONS PART 1: INDIGENOUS (ADJ): local, animals, plants that have always lived or grown in the place where they are as opposed to those that were brought there. EX: There were no snakes indigenous to the islands. RIGOROUS (ADJ): careful, thorough and exact EXPOSURE (NOUN): the state of being put into a situation that is harmful because you have no protection from something that is dangerous Ex: Prolonged exposure to the sun may cause skin cancer. MODIFICATION (NOUN): A small change made in something such as a plan, design or system VIRTUALLY (ADVERB): So nearly that any difference is not important. BREACH (NOUN, VERB): An action that breaks a rule, law or agreement between people ENABLED ( ADJ): Given the ability or opportunity to do something. RESTRICT (VERB): To limit or control the size of something. EX: The new law restricts the use of hand guns. ACQUIRE (VERB):Get, obtain BANISHED (ADJ): not allowed to stay at a particular place. REVEAL (VERB): TO SHOW SOMETHING THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY HIDDEN EX: TO REVEAL SECRETS UNSTABLE (ADJ):1.Dangerous and likely to fall over suddenly because not balanced or properly supported. 2. likely to change suddenly and become worse. EX: an unstable economy INVASION (NOUN): 1.Arrival in a place of alot of people or things. EX: AN ARRIVAL OF TEENAGERS FOR THE POP FESTIVAL 2. A SITUATION IN WHICH DETAILS ABOUT ANOTHER PERSON'S PRIVATE AFFAIRS ARE REVEALED IN A WAY THAT IS UPSETTING OR ILLEGAL ALTERNATIVE (ADJ): A PLAN OR IDEA THAT COULD BE USED INSTEAD OF ANOTHER ONE ALTERNATIVELY (ADJECTIVE) PART 2: ABUNDANT (ADJECTIVE): in large numbers SIGNIFICANTLY (ADVERB): In an imporatnt way or to an important degree INCUR (VERB): To put yourself in an unpleasant situation by your own actions, so that you lose something, get punished, etc. EX: INCUR LOSSES OR DEBTS. Milton incurred debts of over $300,000. INCONVENIENCE (NOUN): Something that causes you problems or difficulty; the state of having problems or difficulty. EX: Compared to the problems in the past, this is only a minor inconvenience. MANIPULATE (VERB): To make someone think or behave exactly as you want them to by skillfully deceiving or influencing them. VOLATILITY (NOUN): Changing suddenly and without much warning SUSTAINABLE (ADJECTIVE): An action or process that can continue or last for a long time. INTENSIVE (ADJECTIVE): Involving a lot of activity, effort or careful attention in a short period of time. EX: intensive English course, intensive care unit in a hospital ADVOCATE (VERB): Publicly support a particular way of doing things. EX: Extremists were openly advocating violence. UNPRECEDENTED (ADJECTIVE): Never having happened before and never having happened so much VENTURE (NOUN): A new business activity that involves taking risks GENERATE (VERB): To produce or create something PRESUMABLY (ADVERB): Used to say that you think something is likely to be true.
