Özet

This study aims to find out the bilingualism effect on subject realisation in Turkish by using an oral production task. In order to do so, Turkish-French bilingual speakers’ production will be compared to Turkish monolingual speakers’ production. In addition, this study also investigates how subject realisation in Turkish is affected by the bilingual children’s language environment. In order to gather information on children’s language environment, Alberta Language Environment Questionnaire (ALEQ) will be administered.
Considering that Turkish is a pro-drop language, if discourse allows, speakers may use a pronoun or drop the subject completely. Previous research (Haznedar, 2007) has shown evidence in support of English influence on the bilingual acquisition of subject realisation in Turkish. In this study, participants will be asked to narrate a picture book, and then the frequency of overt and null subjects will be examined to see whether Turkish-French bilingual speakers’ subject realisation differs from that of Turkish monolingual speakers. Also, how linguistic environment of bilingual children modulates realisation of subjects in Turkish will be examined.
This study will deepen our understanding of subject realisation of Turkish heritage speakers. Its results will be highly important in heritage language education as they will help us modify the heritage language education curriculum accordingly.
