One of the implications of Brexit was its impact on certain aspects of the
UK’s relations with third countries and the legal status of their nationals
within the territory of the UK. This chapter aims at analysing an area which
has been adversely affected by Brexit: the rights of Turkish nationals deriv-
ing from the Turkey–EU Association relationship established by the Ankara
Agreement (AA) of 1963. As well as regulating the trade relations between
the Parties, the AA also had a social element, since it covered the prospective
free movement of workers and service providers between the Parties, adopt-
ing a gradual approach. Following the accession of the UK to the EU in
1973, the UK became party to the AA, binding both the EU and its member
states under EU legal order, as well as Turkey.
