Abstract

The architectural survey conducted between 2010 and 2021 aimed to re-evaluate the 20th century excavations at the ancient Aeolian city of Larisa (Buruncuk). The survey primarily concentrated on in situ building remains and architectural stone finds in Istanbul and Izmir Archaeological Museums collections. Documentation was meticulously carried out using a variety of tools. All the data, spanning from the Bronze Age to the early 3rd century BCE, have been analyzed by the team members through master and doctoral theses. An attempt has been made to create a holistic picture by carefully re-examining excavation results and literature, bringing many problems as well as valuable information.

The site exhibits various architectural remains on different scales. The most monumental structures include the well-preserved acropolis walls, the palatial complex attributed to the local rulers, the temple and the sanctuary in Larisa West; the fort in Larisa East; and the tumulus necropolis with the agricultural buildings in between. Besides, the settlement areas both in Larisa West and East represent the habitation areas with different characteristics. All in all, the architectural documentation re-drawn the scene of an Aeolian cityscape between the 7th and 4th centuries BCE, during the period of Lydian and Persian dominance in the region.
