Abstract:

European Union (EU) member countries are thriving to unify in economical, social, and cultural fields as well as in technical developments, yet air pollution is one of the most serious issues of metropolitans. Air pollution and diminishing of natural resources have become a big threat and producer companies are putting research and development studies in full force in order to decrease the oil consumption of vehicles every day. In internal combustion engines, exhaust emission values are getting lower. On the other hand, usage characteristic also has an undeniable effect on fuel consumption and on exhaust emissions. Especially heavy machinery and commercial vehicles have high fuel consumption and emission values due to their long operating hours and vast engine sizes. In this study, fuel consumption of a 50-vehicle fleet operating on a certain route has been reviewed and fuel consumptions of vehicles have been modeled based on route and vehicle characteristics, in order to decrease the fuel consumption of heavy commercial vehicle fleets and companies, and to identify suggestions for choosing the correct vehicle for the job and correct vehicle usage. The model has been formed by compiling all the real data recorded electronically on the vehicles and have been validated by comparison to fuel consumption of the same vehicles.?As a result, appropriate powertrain units for the vehicles in the fleet have been resized with the simulation program. Modeled fuel consumption compared with measured values. And suggestions for the drivers have been made regarding correct usage. Keywords: Heavy-duty vehicles, modelling fuel consumption, diesel engines.
