Özet

Determination of consolidation properties of contaminant soils such as dredge materials, mine tailings and sludge has become an important problem in geotechnical engineering in last decades. A long lasting investigation programme had been realized within the scope of "Golden Horn Improvement Project" during recent years. The consolidation properties of high water content soils such as Halic dredge material can not be determined by classical consolidation tests since the material consolidates under its self weight or at very low effective stresses. Seepage Induced Test has been developed by Imai (1979) to study the consolidation behaviour of such high water content soils. In this test, consolidation of the soil sample takes place under seepage forces. The seeapage induced test had been modified Znidarcic, D., and Liu, (1989) and used for consolidation properties of phosphatic clays. In the modified model of the seepage induced test equipment, seepage forces are applied by a flow pump to the soil sample. In this paper, the seepage induced testing system which has been established at Yildiz Technical University Soil Mechanics Laboratory is introduced and findings of the test results on Haliç dredge material are presented. The experimental results are observed to be consistent with the relationships proposed in the literature for the variation of void ratio with effective stress and coefficient of permeability with void ratio during consolidation of high water content soils.
