Evaluation of Pollutant Emissions Generated at Bus Stops

Public transport is the transportation alternative which preferred by many people for daily routine. Especially bus rapid transit (BRT) systems are very popular in terms of time management. Nearly a million of passengers use Metrobus line (Istanbul BRT system) daily. Averagely 7160 daily trips are realized. Especially during rush hours, several vehicle can generally exist at the stations, because both many people get out and get on at the buses and the time interval between the two vehicles is so low during this hours. Vehicles run at idle condition during this time and then start with a high engine load at take off motion period. The amount of fuel injection into the cylinder have to increase at the take off period. High engine load operation conditions increases engine out emissions. On the other hand because of non-load idling operation at the bus stops the exhaust gas temperatures decrease and the conversion efficiency of after-treatment equipment deteriorates. Thus, excessive level of pollutant emits in these area where human population density is so high. Within the scope of this study, the emitted emissions were evaluated at the stations of İstanbul BRT. The results showed that a massive amount of emissions are emitted during take off sessions which can be dangerously harmful to inhabitants of the city.
