Özet

This article intends to analyze the place of dance within different identity

construction processes. On the basis of fieldwork, it focuses on the experiences

and practices of two marginalized communities in Turkey. While

the first one is on the ritual movements of an unorthodox religious community

(Alevi), the other one is on the dances that appear in the annual

festivals of the African Turks. Although both groups are marginalized,

their historical experiences, and mostly related to that, the meanings

that dances/movements have acquired in their identity processes, are

distinct. After a brief historical review, the findings of the two fieldworks

will be analyzed comparatively.
