Özet

Typology of Boundaries and Their Effects on Paired Border Cities

In the literature of border studies, there are different typological approaches in demarcation and classifications of boundaries. One of the classifications is based on the components which are used to determine the boundaries like geometrical, natural or artificial. In terms of boundary characteristics, main issue is whether it divides two sides or connects them. For the relations between two sides of the boundary there is another classification like alienated, coexistent or integrated. The process of demarcation is another issue for the boundary classifications in the literature. Antecedent, subsequent or superimposed boundaries are some of the types of boundaries. However, although there are some classifications for paired border cities like partitioned or duplicated, the typological studies of the boundaries are a little bit lacking to explain the cities which are located on the borders and frontiers. In the world there are approximately 250 border towns and may be half of them are paired border cities. In this study, within the varied typological approaches, paired border cities will be studied in terms of their connecting links and relations, functional differences using land-use decisions and differences of settlement patterns to reveal different morphologies of border conditions. The most crucial examples of each type of paired border cities will be selected. Within this selection, to understand the main effects of boundaries on the different paired border cities around the world will be analyzed and mapped. The results of the study will be used to be able to compare them.
