Özet

This study examines the relationship between communicative competence, self-efficacy levels, and communicative needs among English language learners in higher education in Türkiye. The research responds to global "Quality Education" goals, addressing challenges faced by students in English-medium programs. Surveys with 157 students and semi-structured interviews with five instructors were conducted to investigate self-reported communicative and self-efficacy levels, their link to linguistic achievement, and educators’ perspectives. Quantitative analysis revealed significantly lower and more variable communicative abilities in English compared to students’ mother tongue. Higher self-efficacy correlated with better linguistic performance. Qualitative findings highlighted barriers such as fear of public speaking, translation reliance, and limited authentic exposure. Instructors emphasized interactive learning, contextual understanding, and vocabulary development. Recommendations include fostering self-efficacy, reducing class sizes, and integrating culturally relevant, real-world materials. This study contributes practical strategies for enhancing English-medium instruction and improving communication skills in higher education.
