Shadow quality is one of the lighting design criteria. This paper contains some results of the first phase of a study which is aimed to develop a method determining the shadow quality occurred in interiors under artificial lighting. In the first phase, a mock-up room has been created in lighting software. Various scenarios have been constituted by the variables and the change of the shadow features has been displayed. Thus, the change of shadow features by different factors could be investigated. By means of these investigations, possible approaches to define the shadow quality are evaluated. In the second phase, the mentioned mock-up room will be constituted in 1/1 scale and surveys will be performed by subjects to define their impression and choice regarding various shadow features. It is aimed to determine the acceptable limits of shadow quality in interiors by considering the results of both phases of the study.
