Özet
Urban areas and its residents are in a state of constant reciprocated relationship. This relationship affects both sides with different features related to citizen preferences on selecting the area where they desire to live. This study analyzes the effects of social features on urban living conditions, aims to analyze citizen perception in terms of quality of life within the framework of the concept of livability. The data is taken from a survey, which was gathered by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality for the social factors reflecting the neighborhood preferences of city residents are used to analyze the perception of livability between districts of Istanbul by using a fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering algorithm. By assigning gradual membership values to each district cluster, FCM enables to represent uncertainties in the neighborhood preference evaluations. As a result of the analysis, the urban districts for Istanbul are grouped as three clusters which are shaped by different social factors, such as household structure, religious beliefs, political views, alcohol consumption habits, and cultural diversity. The results obtained can be used for decisionmaking support mechanisms, aiming to involve not only economic constraints but also social preferences.
