Özet

Today, the cultural heritage embodied in historic urban fabric and layered urban fabric is an indicator of a country’s commitment to heritage development. While continuously advancing technology directly influences ways of life, it also necessitates the transformation of the physical environment. In modern cities, change proceeds naturally; however, in areas where traditional fabrics are preserved, difficulties arise in adapting to contemporary living conditions. In traditional cities built according to the needs of their time, demands emerging because of change have required users to intervene in the built environment. These interventions are often carried out in an uncontrolled and unconscious manner, particularly within urban fabrics inhabited by low-income user profiles. Nevertheless, the controlled and conscious integration of contemporary living conditions into traditional buildings in line with users’ needs is of great importance for the preservation, continuity, and sustainability of the original values of traditional urban fabric. In this study, traditional Muğla houses and street patterns are examined. Based on the physical transformations identified in the İskender Alper House, which has survived to the present day while maintaining its residential function, recommendations are presented for the conservation of traditional settlements without losing their defining characteristics. It is emphasized that all buildings and building components forming the traditional fabric constitute inseparable parts of the whole; however, each structure is unique and possesses its own original characteristics, and the physical conservation of buildings is only possible together with the users who inhabit them.
