Abstract

On Feb. 6, 2023, two earthquakes, associated with the East Anatolian fault system, struck South-East Türkiye with a magnitude of 7,8 and 7,5. During this earthquake, many buildings especially the historic buildings in eleven cities had severe damages. Traditional building types in Southeast Anatolia are timber and masonry construction. They are constructed with local materials and their traditional construction systems. The masonry construction system is generally dominant in the region. During this earthquake, especially the destruction of recently restored monumental structures was quite thought-provoking. Investigations made in the area showed that the restorers of these structures did not take into account the local construction system. In this study, the local builders’ knowledge on sustaining of masonry structures, their construction technics and methodology and results of the negligence of such knowledge will be shared.
