Bu araştırmanın amacı, fotogerçekçi sanat pratiklerindeki görsel anlatıların toplumsal olay ve olgularla ilişkilerini göstergebilimsel olarak analiz etmektir. Sanat eleştirisi niteliğindeki bu metinde ABD kökenli foto realist sanat akımının önde gelen temsilcileri arasında yer alan Davis Cone’nun eserine odaklanılmıştır. Bu kapsamda Davis Cone'un 1986-1987 tarihli “Criterion Center” isimli çalışması kent yaşamına odaklanması dikkate alınarak göstergebilimsel analiz için seçilmiştir. Analiz metninde incelenen çalışmanın anlam katmanları göstergebilim olanaklarından yararlanılarak incelenmiştir. Eserdeki görsel unsurların anlam katmanları, temalar, mesajlar ve sosyal olgular açısından analiz edilmiştir. Anlam dizgeleri değerlendirilirken dönemin bireysel sosyal yaşamı ve toplumsal olguları ele alınmıştır. Bu değerlendirmelerde tüketim toplumu, kültür, kent sosyolojisi ve sosyoekonomik statü gibi toplumsal olgular tespit edilmiştir. Fotogerçekçi sanatçıların temsile dayalı betimleme eğilimlerinin, nesnelerin görsel gerçekliğini büyük bir netlikle aktarabilmenin ötesinde, toplumsal olay ve olguların sosyokültürel paradigmalarını da açık ve etkili bir şekilde ifade ettiği gözlenmiştir. Eserlerin göstergebilimsel değerlendirmede belgesel niteliklerinin toplumsal paradigmaları tarihsel bağlamları ile analiz etmeye yönelik önemli olanaklar sunduğu sonucuna varılmıştır.
The aim of this research is to semiotically analyse the relations of visual narratives in photorealist art practices with social events and phenomena. This text, which is an art criticism, focuses on the work of Davis Cone, one of the leading representatives of the US-based photorealist art movement. In this context, Davis Cone’s 1986-1987 work titled “Criterion Center” was selected for semiotic analysis. The layers of meaning of the work analysed in the analysis text were analysed with a deconstructive approach by making use of the possibilities of semiotics. Considering the fact that the science of sociology accepts daily experiences as data, it has been seen that the data obtained from the works support not only the analysis of a focussed history but also a historical approach with continuity. The themes, messages and socially referenced phenomena represented by the visual elements in the works were evaluated as thematic layers. When the meaning strings supporting each other in the works were evaluated, it was observed that the social life of the period in the individual and the phenomena in the society in general were addressed. In these evaluations, social phenomena related to social phenomena such as consumer society, culture, urban sociology, socioeconomic status, which are also the subject of discussion in the current period, have been identified. It has been observed that the depiction tendencies of photorealist artists based on the understanding of representation are capable of expressing the sociocultural paradigms of social events and phenomena in a very clear and effective way, beyond merely conveying the visual reality of objects. It has been concluded that the documentary qualities of the works in semiotic evaluation offer important possibilities to analyse social paradigms with their historical contexts, in the detail of receptive and sociological data.
