Özet

Ottoman Architecture reached a unity of style and constructional perfection in the 16th century under the leadership of Architect Sinan. The monumental structures built in mainly in the capital city Istanbul, show the best examples of Ottoman Masonry construction techniques until the innovations introduced by the industrial revolution. Research on Architect Sinan and Classical Ottoman Architecture has provided a lot of new information about the constructions techniques and architectural features of the monumental buildings of this period, especially thanks to the increasing restoration practices. Recent more comprehensive research has revealed that structural wooden elements regularly found within the monumental masonry buildings play an important functional role. In these monumental masonry buildings, structural wooden elements starting from the bottom of the foundations extending to the upper cover of the building, constitute an important of these structures. The restoration of these decaying organic timber structural elements in the masonry structure, from wooden piles to floor grid systems and in-wall wooden beam connection systems is an important subject of discussion in modern restoration works, especially in-wall wooden beams systems. The purpose of this article is to examine the condition and conservation problems of the structural wooden elements within the masonry structures, which are important components of the 15th-18th century Ottoman monumental architecture, with various examples.
