Özet

The great majority of historical buildings that stand today were founded on rigid-type soil, i.e. rock, whereas some of them were founded on compressible soil layers. Due to actual requirements such as excavation or traffic regulations, any change in environmental conditions of historical buildings that were founded on compressible soil layers affects foundation soil and can cause some problems like excessive deformation. From this point of view, load-deformation behavior of model masonry walls which were founded on the compressible soil was investigated. The model walls were constructed on the reinforced concrete foundation with single-type brick known as traditional blend brick and different lime mortars that were compatible with the historic ones. The walls were founded on the sand soil which was laid in the tank with dimensions of 3.0 x 1.0 x 1.0 m and were tested under vertical loads by hydraulic loading frame. The mechanical properties of the masonry walls’ constituents including the brick and the mortars, and also both the mechanical and the index properties of the sand were determined before the loading tests. After the experimental process, analysis of the test results showed that not only the characteristics of employed mortar but also rigidness and strength of underlying soil play a major role in structural behaviour of masonry walls
