The
present study focuses on the preparation of starch/Chitosan based biodegradable
bionanocomposite films incorporated with or without Cu-based metal organic
frameworks/graphene oxide (CuMOF@GO) for food packaging applications. Bionanocomposite
flms based on wheat starch, chitosan, Quince seed mucilage (QSM) or Aloe vera gel (AV) as modifiers and
CuMOF@GO nanocrystals were evaluated towards their potential application in
food packaging industry. The films, with different concentrations of QSM or AV
gel which have been well-known for their natural antioxidants and film-forming
properties, and CuMOF@GO, were prepared by casting method. Mechanical
properties, water vapor permeability (WVP), oxygen transmission rate (OTR),
morphology, thermal stability, and antimicrobial activity are utilized to
determine the effect of the nanoparticle concentration. The chemical structure
and molecular arrangement of mixture components were analyzed with ATR–FTIR
spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Hydrogen bond interactions among the film
components, conformational rearrangements as well as changes in crystallinity
degree were confirmed. A study of thermal resistance showed the delay of
degradation observed together with an increase QSM or AV gel amounts. The overall
conclusion of the results indicates that incorporation of antimicrobial
nanoparticles is decisive in making films appropriate for food biopackaging
applications. All the films with QSM or AV gain the increase resistance to
microbial action.
