CombZned Methods Zn DocumentatZon: ArchZtectural Surveys at BZnbZrkZlZse and DaskyleZon
This contribution blends two objects of Byzantine archaeology each presenting its own challenges regarding intensity, context and state of preservation. The well-known ruins of Binbirkilise are dispersed across the hills and plains of Karadağ massive. Our three successive surveys have focused on the mountain settlement of Değle taking Metin Ahunbay’s comprehensive yet unpublished studies as a starting point. We carried out a digital intensive survey for a better understanding of the topography and the Byzantine ruins. A series of DTMs and orthographic data was overlapped with external QMS data and visualized in GIS environment. These data were superposed with Ahunbay’s survey results on GIS for the current condition of the site.In Daskyleion, our 2022 survey captured the scanty remains of the monumental Byzantine fortress on Hisartepe with special foci on construction techniques and architectural features. The building has mainly survived on the foundation level with occasional stone and brick layers above. Hybrid methods were used to obtain especially a 3D-modeling of the unique bonding timber system that is represented by holes inside the masonry. The survey results have confirmed the significance of this Byzantine castrum at otherwise “Achaemenid Daskyleion” and greatly matched with already studied small finds as well.
