Lamination, coating and packaging
materials play a vital role in preservation, quality maintenance and shelf life
of meat and meat products. In recent years, the innovation of novel food coating
and packaging has contributed to the shelf life and much preserved the quality
of meat products. This concept of the industry thereby brought convenience to
consumers. As recently as the last 10 years, the concept of providing edible biodegradable
packaging materials has become very important
and stimuli to preserve some crucial quality traits of meat. Majority of these
packaging materials are various that differ in their raw material, the way of
production, the purpose of use, potency, the specificity of the food that would be
preserved in it and finally its resistance in terms of physical, chemical and
microbial viewpoint. There is a tremendous number of debates addressing the problems
of environmental pollution caused by petroleum, silica, forestry, metals and
clay materials that are used in the fabrication of non-biodegradable packaging.
Thus, the utilization of renewable resources has to be focused and receive much
attention, yet this would require extensive efforts of research to develop and
improve the quality characteristics of degradable-packaging made from natural
and waste materials.
