This paper addresses a nonlinear controller design for speed control of permanent magnet synchronous motor drives. The nonlinear controller is structured as a backstepping-based pseudo-sliding mode controller. Moreover, the particle swarm optimization method, a nature-based optimization method, is employed to solve the problem of optimum controller gains in the nonlinear control process. In the system of permanent magnet synchronous motor drives, parametric uncertainties are considered to show the effectiveness of both the nonlinear controller structure and optimizing of the controller design gains. Simulation results are carried out to test the designed nonlinear controller method, which has the optimum controller gains, aiming to track the time-varying speed reference in permanent magnet synchronous motor drives.
