Özet

Urban land use planning is a versatile and multi-choice decision-making process that
requires collaboration. The use of traditional information management methods is limited
in the planning process of problematic regional and urban lands [1]. Geographic
Information System (GIS) provides the capability for dynamic query and analysis,
visualise of spatial and geographical data and a more understandable representation.
Moreover, GIS provides access to large quantities of data and is a tool for efficient
decision-making in regional and urban planning. So there is a requirement for these new
technologies of GIS-based and visualization to contribute the urban planner and decision
maker to make effective plans and decisions, and to access the information platform for
public participation regional and urban planning. The application of GIS is indispensably
closely related to urban planning facing and planning of the humanities, the natural
environment. For this reason, GIS is increasingly becoming a key component of decisionmaking
systems and often used in planning. With recent technological developments in
the integration of GIS with planning models, visualization, and the Internet have allowed
GIS to become a standard decision-making tool for a broad range of planning and
management applications. This study gives an overview of role, evolution and
applications of GIS in regional and urban planning.
