Discrete analysis can be necessary in some cases in thermal analysis of heat exchangers. These cases are two phase and transcritical flows, and pinch point analysis. Thanks to discrete methods, changes in fluid properties can be included in thermal analysis, temperature profiles can be obtained along the tube, and the effectiveness values can be calculated numerically based on basic flows alone. In this research, discrete modeling of E-type shell and tube heat exchanger with two tube passes, based on axial flows, are presented in defined number of transfer units (NTU) and thermal capacity ratio (Cr). According to the results, the temperature profiles have been obtained as expected and the numerically obtained effectiveness values have been quite close to the values obtained from the analytical formulation. Moreover, the developed discrete method gives also stable and accurate results in the case of temperature cross. As a result, the developed discrete method can be applied in wide NTU and Cr ranges for thermal analysis of this type of heat exchanger.
