Özet

Global warming and climate change are serious problems facing humanity on a global scale. Greenhouse gas emissions released into the atmosphere further deepen these problems. Since the vast majority of ships used in maritime transportation have an internal combustion diesel engine and operate with petroleum-derived fuel, they emit a significant amount of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. To overcome this problem, researchers focused their studies on alternative marine fuels. Biofuels are among the promising alternative fuels for the marine industry. However, it would make more sense to adopt a life cycle assessment (LCA) approach to estimate the net carbon impact of biofuels on the atmosphere. The aim of this study is to explain the LCA approach and then compare the net carbon emissions by examining the biofuels obtained with different raw materials and processes with the LCA approach and trying to determine the appropriate biofuel for maritime transportation by evaluating with selected criteria.
