We describe the status of women physicists in Turkey and offer statistical data illustrating their present status. The number of universities in Turkey has risen from 80 to 104 (74 public, 30 private) in the last six years. Physics is studied as a general education subject in only 67 universities, all public institutions. In 2008, women fill approximately 30% of academic positions in physics, of which 16% are at the level of professor, 17% associate professor, 27% assistant professor, and 43% research assistant. Compared with the results of a 2002 IUPAP Working Group on Women in Physics survey, there has been an obvious increase in the number of female physicists in universities. Although the percentage of higher-ranking full and associate professors has increased only 5%, the number of assistant professors and research assistants has increased almost twofold.
