Beacon Satellite Symposium Advancing Ionospheric Science Through Global Collaboration, Rome, İtalya, 10 - 14 Kasım 2025, (Yayınlanmadı)
This study represents Türkiye’s first initiative for ionospheric monitoring using low-cost Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology at the national scientific research camp located on Horseshoe Island, Antarctica. As part of the 2026 Turkish Scientific Antarctic Expedition (TAE - X), the project aims to estimate the Total Electron Content (TEC) of the ionosphere and monitor ionospheric phenomena through the deployment of low-cost GNSS receivers. This research is supported by TUBITAK Polar 1001 Project No. 124G057 titled "Monitoring and Performance Analysis of Ionospheric Total Electron Content with Low-Cost GNSS Receivers on Horseshoe Island, Antarctica".
The one second interval and multi-constellation (GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO and BeiDou) raw GNSS data will be collected in the field and processed into TEC values using custom developed software written in the Python programming language. In the initial phase, the data will be analyzed and visualized as time series. In the subsequent phases of the study, a new ionospheric model will be developed and supported by an integrated local [1] and global (International GNSS Service-IGS) GNSS networks.
To assess the accuracy and reliability of the ionospheric estimations, the results will be compared with data from the Global Ionospheric Radio Observatory (GIRO) and the NeQuick2 ionospheric model [2,3]. In addition to evaluating the feasibility of deploying low-cost GNSS technologies under Antarctic conditions, this research aims to contribute to regional and global ionospheric modelling. This study is of great importance since ionospheric studies are relatively rare in Antarctica.
