Özet

It could be stated that the history of sculpture in the Ottoman Empire dates back to the 16th century. It is recorded that, Pargalı Ibrahim Pasha, the grand vizier of the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, placed some sculptures, which he brought back to İstanbul after the Hungarian Campaign, in the garden of his own palace and in some other places in İstanbul. However, those sculptures could neither become pioneers for   spreading the art of sculpture nor become permanent. The art of sculpture started to develop in the monument form during the Tanzimat Reform Era, yet it still couldn’t leave the court. It could be noted that the first monument erected in the Ottoman period is the ‘Abide-i Hürriyet’ (Liberty) Monument in Şişli, İstanbul. After the Turkish Republic was founded, sculpture in open space was mainly in the monument form, yet through the years it started to determine its own concepts and find new styles. At this point, it should be noted that this paper is not aiming to look at the history of the art of sculpture from The Ottoman period to now; therefore these words can only serve as an introduction to the scope of this paper.
