Classical guitar, being both a polyphonic instrument and having a wide-range of coloristic capacity, has inspired composers and performers to think of this instrument as a small orchestra. Yet this matter is bound to one's interpretation and is a vague subject. While the Romantic guitarists were completely immersed in the concept of miniature orchestra, the modern guitarists have decreased the use of coloration. The control and the clarity were promoted more by these guitarists. As new approaches emerged, guitar makers began to enter into new explorations. From time to time these different approaches of the romantic and the modern performers conflict with each other. In this study Fernando Sor, the first important orchestral composer and guitarist who composed his works in the understanding of a miniature orchestra, is examined. The different approaches are revealed by analyzing Sor's Op.9 Variations on a Theme from Mozart's opera The Magic Flute, one edition by romantic guitarist Andres Segovia and the other by modern guitarist Manuel Barrueco.
