Abstract

The aim of education of economics is to provide students with a large number of socio-economic concepts and models that can be useful in many ways in social and professional aspects of life. These concepts and models are also assumed to be means of solving socio-economic problems. In Turkey this is also a motto for whole higher education in Economics. However there is another fact that has been observed for a long time. Despite this lofty motto, success level of the students (which have been measured by percentiles) who prefer the departments of Economics in University Entry Exam has declined in last 15 years. In this paper, we are trying to discuss the reasons behind this fact. In the first part of the study, we present the situation of Economics education in our universities and its percentiles for the past two decades. Then with the help of a survey among students of a series of departments of economics in Istanbul we put forth the reasons of declining success. Then in the final part, we discuss the results.
