Özet

Nowadays, polymers with biocompatibility have great importance in the medical industry. Poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) is one of the most preferred biopolymers because of its biological, chemical, and physical properties. PEG is a synthetic polyether with high biocompatibility, hydrophilicity, flexibility, and solubility. Despite its solubility in both water and various solvents, it is nondegradable. However, by the incorporations with polymers, such as poly (lactic acid) and poly (ε-caprolactone), amphiphilic structures can be obtained. Nevertheless, its bio-inertness restricts cell adhesion, proliferation, and protein adsorption. This can be overcome by the addition of cell-binding materials that enhance cell adhesion. Its improvable properties, nontoxicity, and nonimmunogenicity make it a suitable candidate for biomedical applications. Therefore, our aim is to compile a study that considers the properties of PEG as a biomaterial, including its synthesis methods, blending, and biomaterial applications.
