Özet

Within the scope of the study, the strengths and weaknesses of highway, railway and maritime transport types compared to each other and their chances in terms of our country were explored and evaluated. Research shows that in 2020, passenger traffic in Turkey will increase to 540 billion passenger-kilometers, while freight traffic will be 300 billion ton-km. When the increase is considered to continue in this way, it is not possible for passenger and freight transport demand to be maintained entirely by highways. Today, however, the transport service in our country has become dependent to the highway due to the wrong policies from the past. The bill for this commitment is that every year an average of more than 6,000 people lose their lives in traffic accidents, thousands of people are injured and disabled and face high property damage. When examining the topography and location of our country, the possibilities of spreading the transportation types, the other two modes are very suitable for widespread use similar to highways. When new policies and possibilities are considered, the efficient use of railways and maritime transportation is an indispensable necessity. For these reasons, it is very important to focus on infrastructure improvement and modernization studies in order to make the most of the existing railway networks and to save the railways from the dilapidated structure, and to develop the maritime routes in terms of the ports vehicles and services.
