Bioresorbable polymers represent a very large family within the title of biomaterials. One of the most important steps in biomaterials in the last 30 years has been the gradual transition from biostable prostheses to bioresorbable implants. To more accurately understand all the sciences and practices behind bioresorbable polymers, it is necessary to start with the general definitions of the terms. Scientifically, the definition of such materials is made as “degradation, at least partially mediated by a biological system.” In the field of biomedical applications, bioresorbable polymers can be used for a variety of purposes. Bioabsorbable polymers are subject to deterioration in the human body and contain long polymer chains that are reduced to shorter segments that can be absorbed by cells. In this section, natural and synthetic bioresorbable polymers and their bioresorption mechanisms, synthesis, processing, and medical applications will be examined.
