Abstract
It is well known that the presence of the honing scratches/grooves in cyl inder liner surfaces is intended and desired as they improve the lubrication and retain the debris, reducing the piston assembly/liner friction and conse quently improving the fuel economy and longevity of the internal combus tion (IC) engines [1]. Automotive industry components, such as cylinder sleeves, crankpins and camshaft lobes, valve seats and valve guides, valve body, and high-pres sure pump components, need lubrication, which demands a unique surface texture. This is achieved by plateau honing, obtained in two machining operations: prehoning or rough honing with large abrasive grain size and subsequent finishing or fine honing with small abrasive grain size. Rough honing induces deep creases of specific geometry for effective lubricant retention. The smooth surface between the deep creases is machined to reduce wear and enable sealing–finishing honing [2].
